Sombrero Island – Anguilla’s first Ramsar Site designated
Lying 65 kilometres northeast of Anguilla, Sombrero Island is a 38-hectare flat-topped limestone outcropping situated in the middle of the Anegada Passage. Mid-way between Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, its isolation from any other landmass has made it one of Anguilla’s hidden treasures – an island rich in history, colourful stories, and biodiversity.

Ascension Island
History of the Atlantic Cable & Undersea Communications – Ascension Island
At the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899 the only way to get a telegraph message from the UK to Cape Town was either via the west coast or the east coast of Africa, a slow and tedious journey. A quicker and more direct route was urgently required. The Eastern Telegraph Company contracted the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company to manufacture and lay the necessary cables, which were to link Cape Town – St. Helena – Ascension – St. Vincent, Cape Verde Islands.

Chagos: Injustice towards the islands by Morgan Fache
Insecurity has increased everywhere on the island. Consequently, so have the inequalities. The rich districts have become fortresses. The poor districts have become powder kegs. “In Chagos, we were simply living; there were not as many problems”, a phrase that could be attributed to any Chagossian.
Chagos The Forbidden Archipelago
The recent history of Chagos, starting from around the 1960s is not a pretty one. It is a grim example of the way the big powers of the world, in this case, the United Kingdom and the United States, re-write the maps and resettle populations by force, with no respect for native rights.
Chagossians/Ilois – Minority Rights Group
As a condition of Mauritian independence, the British government in 1965 persuaded nationalist politicians to relinquish claims to the Chagos Archipelago, a group of islands including the coral atoll Diego Garcia (land area: 60 sq km), some 2,400 kilometres to the north-east of Mauritius.
Chagossians-the original inhabitants of Diego Garcia face U.S. government in the court (Cultural Survival)
Chagossians (often referred to as Ilois) were the indigenous people of Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean. From 1965 to 1973 the U.S. government put them into overcrowded boats and shipped them off to Mauritius.

In that program, you heard about the early usage of wireless for communication with nearby shipping, and also the story of the radio station with the double callsign, VR6AY-PITC, which was in use for amateur communication and also for occasional relay broadcasts to the United States. Today, we continue with additional information in this interesting saga as we present the story of radio broadcasting on Pitcairn Island.
