| Beaver Island |
Beaver Island lies west of Weddell Island and south of New Island. Beaver Settlement lies on the island, with an airstrip nearby. It is owned by Sally and Jerome Poncet. Beaver Island was named after the whaling vessel "Beaver" which was recorded as being the first whaling ship to double Cape Horn.
In October 2003, the wreckage of a missing French yacht was found on the island by their son, Leif Poncet.
Beaver Island supports a colony of around 2,800 pairs of Gentoo Penguins and, at this time of year, the eggs will be hatching. There will be a great deal of activity as the adults return en masse to feed their young chicks. The area is also excellent for indigenous wildfowl such as Kelp and Upland Geese and Ruddy-headed Ducks. Patagonian Crested Ducks, Magellanic Penguins and Striated Caracaras are also likely and southern sea lions are common at this time of the year. |
